How to Read your Credit Reports

You hear the advice constantly: Before you apply for a mortgage loan you need to read your credit report. It’s good advice. Your credit report will alert you to any potential financial trouble spots. If you forgot to make a car payment two years ago, your credit report will list it. If you have an open credit-card account that you haven’t used in five years, your report will show it. And if you’ve declared bankruptcy or foreclosure in the last seven to 10 years? Those negative judgments will be on your credit report, too. But here’s the big question: Once you do receive your […]

3 Things You Should Do Before Your Home Appraiser Shows Up

Pricing your home can be a tricky maneuver, requiring a knowledge of the market most homeowners don’t possess. For that reason, many real estate agents recommend a professional appraisal before putting a home up for sale. This appraisal will give a homeowner a firm idea of how much the market will bear, preventing him from selling his home for less than its worth. In other cases, a buyer brings an appraiser in to price the house as a means of ensuring the asking price meets the home’s value. Someone who has never used an appraiser may not know what to expect when the appraiser […]

Should You Lend Your Kids Money to Buy a House?

Buying a house requires a minimum down payment between 3.5 percent and 5 percent. And unfortunately, it might take several years to save up for a purchase, which can significantly delay dreams of ownership. However, in an effort to help your children realize their dream sooner, you may decide to lend them money to buy a house. Lending a child money to buy a house is not uncommon. In fact, “7 percent of first-time homebuyers in 2013 received a loan from a friend or relative, typically their parents, to help purchase a home,” according to the National Association of Realtors. However, despite the fact that […]

Rising interest rates make ARMs more attractive with their lower rates. But what’s a better choice these days: a fixed mortgage or ARM?

Congratulations on making the decision to purchase a new home. For some, this may have been an arduous process, while for others, they may have found their new dwelling quickly. Regardless of the time spent, it’s just the beginning of the home-buying process. Next up is deciding which type of mortgage is for you: should you go with a fixed rate or an adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM)? Rewind to 2013 and homeowners faced with this decision, found fixed-rate and ARMs close to each other, with many borrowers not taking the ARM plunge as they were unwilling to take some risk of rising interest rates, increasing that […]
